-Susan Datz

They’re abundant, but some of them are: (1) A very special auburn-haired young lady I “worshipped from afar” (through Sheepshead AND Shellbank before that), having no clue that even though the feelings would eventually fade with maturity, the memories per se would forever remain with this then-hopeless Romantic. I was totally smitten with her. Though we hardly knew each other, she was still an altogether unique phenomenon in my young life, and my warm memories of Laurie Sher make me smile even today. (2) Being one of the SBHS students to attend (along with my circle of friends) a Leonard Bernstein rehearsal at Carnegie Hall on Thursday April 6, 1961, with no way of knowing it would be a pivotal day for me, and that eventually I’d be privileged to get to know him. (3) Having my first published article appear two months before graduation and, despite my earnest protests, having Mr. Sevush insist on showing it to the entire orchestra. (4) Seena Horlick (Jan.’62), whom I’ll always remember: she was the only girl who offered me a kiss after the graduation ceremonies.

-Jeffrey Dane

Best memory of Sheepshead Bay High School: easy - the friends. Carol and Susan Friedman (The Twins) were a gift to me as a child and as a teenager. Every day, I walked up Bedford Avenue and called for them on the way to school. We then picked up several other friends along the way. I never realized what an important ritual walking to and from high school could be.
It was our preparatory time, our social talk, our debriefing, our opportunity to be girlfriends.
Very special.
-Bonnie Leiderman
